The Forecast 7' 6" 4wt blank is just about the best combination of affordability and performance when lined properly (I really like Scientific Angler's Air Cell, DT, 4 wt. line on this blank).

Things I learned while building this rod
I'd say the one thing I realized when building Phil's rod is how much time I put into the cork grips when I turn them myself...they take HOURS of work whereas I was able to quickly assemble Phil's rod in just 2 sessions (eliminated turning the grip and the reel seat comes already assembled!).
